Multiple ImagesMultiple images can have many meanings but the clue is really in the name. It is one or a sequence of photographs with more than one image in them. They can be together in different ways: you could merge them together, have a sequence of images next to each other (but they are relavent to one another) or you could get many different images from different sources.

Assessment ObjectivesAO1: research & generate ideas
AO2: experiment with & refine your work AO3: document your learning AO4: create a personal & meaningful response and evaluate it |
PoppletI used popplet as a mind map putting 'Multiple Images' in the middle. I put many different types of multiple images, e.g photographs of photographs, multiple exposure etc... I've added pictures as an example of each, so please scroll through and enjoy.
PhotoshopFor part of our project we have been experimenting with Photoshop. The photo on the left I created as I felt it really fit the theme of 'multiple images' well. To create this image I used two different images and blended them together. I found an image of two people skating and made this black for effect and filled on body in with another image I found of the ocean. I feel this works just due to the simplicity of it and how it links so strongly with the theme of multiple images.
Multiple Image: Photo StripsI feel like this image turned out really well. I based it on the image to the right but I used many images of one person rather than lots of different people. I also spread the images out to make it look like one persons face had been 'stretched'. Finally I feel the fact that I made it in black & white so the strips would blend well together and also to make it look authentic.
Narrative ImageThe image above I created as part of the theme of multiple images. The task set was to create an image or sequence of images in the style of photographer Duane Michals. We had to make the image a narrative image, so I used a poem written by Amy. D Liskey which I feel shows what the pictures are trying to show: A dream. I used two different effects to differentiate between a dream and reality. Colour; dream, Black & white; reality. (Showing that a dream is much more peaceful and happy than reality)

My favourite imageThe image below is one of the first images I found that caught my eye when we were researching the theme of multiple images. I really like this image as I feel it really shows how you can put two (or more) images in one picture but still make the picture look as if they both blend together (although in a slightly abstract way)
MULTIPLE IMAGE-LAYING PHOTOS IN STRIPS
The image to the left of shay was the first image I created that portrays the theme of multiple images. I first got the idea from this image I found on Pinterest: Multiple Image- Laying Photos in StripsThe image to far left of shay was the first image I created that was linked with the multiple image theme. I based it on the photo on the left that I found on flickr. Although they are slightly different the process is the same. They are several different images of facial features layered on top of each other. The difference is that mine is of one person where as they use different people and also a range of effects.
Multiple ImageBelow is an image I made that represents multiple image. This was an experiment trying to create an optical illusion
The main aim of this image was to create an 'optical illusion'. I got the inspiration from photos I have seen of people holding and image of an image of an image etc... I did this by printing the image 3 times in different sizes and then sticking them on the picture. The picture is meant to be telling a story- so similar to a narrative image.

Evaluation:
I started this project by researching multiple images on different sources such as flickr, tumblr etc.. I did this to gain my knowledge on the different types of multiple image there were such as projection, collage, narrative sequences. I got many ideas from photographers such as Duane Michals. I have created 3 final projects so far using different techniques. I have had ideas to developed these images by adding to them. For example I could use ideas from John Baldessari who places colourful circles on pictures usually just on faces. Although simple this idea is really effective as it can add colour and change the overall whole image.
So far when doing my final projects I have used techniques such as a narrative image sequence, collage in strips and having a picture of the same picture of the picture (inspired by dear photograph). When creating my narrative sequence I refined my idea by changing effects on certain images. It was representing a dream and reality so I made the effect very vibrant and colourful for the dream and black and white and dull for the reality. This was to help people differentiate between the two. I have used many different bits of equipment to help me finish my final projects. I used and ipod for two of the projects and a cannon for one. I obviously had to use things such as scissors and glue when making my designs and mounting them on card when finished. I feel this project have really improved my photography skills as I have learnt how to use different effects on a camera (canon). Also when experimenting with different techniques I have gained new skills. This has no only helped me gain skills but my work has improved over time. This is because I have learnt how to refine and change ideas when they are finnished to make the image look completely new.
I have recorded my work by scanning it and putting it on my blog (tumblr) and mainly on my website as I can evaluate it on here. I have used my blog and website to tell the story of my learning by explaining through each process as I did it. I have also added pictures and explained when I have experimented with something so I can look at ‘what I can do better’. This is always good as it can improve future work by learning from your mistakes.
I have created many things throughout the process of experimenting with ‘multiple images’. Firstly I created a collage in strips of shay. (This was based on an image similar to one by Bettina Birmarcker). I took several images of him doing many different expressions such as happy, excited, sad, scared etc.. I took this on a ipod against a white background to emphasis his expressions. Once I had uploaded it to a computer I changed the effect to black and white, I thought this would be effective as it would make the photos blend together more when layered. Once they were printed I cut them into strips and stuck them on top of one another so several of his eyes, nose, mouth etc. This made the image look like a very long version of his face but came out as a good image that fit in with the theme we were looking at. Secondly I created a different style of images (a narrative sequence). I used my friend as a model and I found a poem called ‘Dream Poem’ by Amy .D Liskey. I feel this poem really illustrated the images I took. The photos were aimed to portray a dream, there are 15 images going downwards in rows of 3’s. As I have mentioned I changed the effect on the images to show the contrast between the dream and reality. I feel this worked as it told a story and this is one of the effects multiple images has. Finally I created a picture of casper looking down at a picture and this picture is of him looking down at another picture of him and it repeats itself. This fits with the theme as ‘multiple images’ are actually visible on the page.
For this project I have chose to respond to multiple images by experimenting with loads of different techniques and seeing what went well and what did not this helped me learn from my mistakes. I feel my most successful piece of work is my narrative story as it has been refined and completely finished. I have displayed my work on boards mainly but I have scanned them so I can put them on my website and blog. If I had more time I would definitely make another final project and experiment with more techniques such as projection. I would also like to refine some of my other pieces by looking at adding colour and different effects but I feel this overall scheme of work had improved and developed my skills on photography.
